Cemetery on Bloomingdale Road

Johann Michael arrived on the ship "Chance" with Jacob and Christoff
(Stoffel) Kettenring at Philadelphia in 1765. He went to Lancaster PA
where he married Mary in 1776. He then went to Maryland by 1781 and was in
Wythe VA by September 1783.

From the Southwest VA Tax assement 1815 from "Southwest Virginia Tax
Assesments, 1815" compiled by May B. Kegley:
Michael Kettering, one farm on the South Fork of Reed Creek, 518 acres
having thereon two dwelling houses of wood, two stories each, 30 feet by
20 feet each, one barn, one corn house, all of wood, valued at $3000.

From "Historic Sites of Sullivan County"

The John Ketron Mansion on Reedy Creek Road (Bloomingdale Pike), in the
Arcadia Community, is a large, two story hewn log house, now covered with
white siding. It has a large back wing and porches on the front and side.
In 1976 it was owned by Bruce Ketron. The Ketron heirs say this is one of
the oldest houses in Sullivan county, which is quite possible since it
stands in the Reedy Creek Settlement area.
Michael Ketron (or Kettering), the progenitor of this branch of the Ketron
family, came to America in 1765 from Hess-Dounstadt, Germany. He married
Mary Marguard (Born in Germany in 1747) in 1766 in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania.
Michael, known as "Michael, the Weaver," had apprenticed as a weaver of
stockings in Germany. He brought his hand loom to America where he
continued his trade. The Ketrons moved west with a caravan of pack horses
in 1772 bringing with them their four children. They settled for a time in
Wythe County, Virginia where he purchased 500 acres of unimproved land . He
knew nothing of farming nor outdoor work but his wife was well versed in
farming and could use an ax well (a thing her husband could not do).
Michael and Mary's son, John Kettenring was the first member of the family
to migrate (by 1790) to the Arcadia section of Sullivan County. Another of
Michael's sons, Henry, came to this section later. The father, Michael ,
joined them in 1809 and died here in 1814. He is buried in the Arcadia
Cemetery.
When John and Katie Ketron died they left the house to Watson Ketron, the
son of his brother, Henry. John had no children. Watson let his brother
Reuben, and his brother Joseph live there. It was then left to Thomas W.
Ketron, son of Reuben and then his son Audie B. Ketron. He left it to his
nephew Bruce.
From Sullivan County BiCentenial book 1976 article submitted by Betty J.
(Bishop) Willoughby of Ticklaw LA
The name Kettenring which means chains of links or rings is said to have
been given to a Swiss blacksmith in the Rhineland at the time surnames
were first beginning to be used. The chains this person made were said to
be used in the clearing of the Black Forest. The first recorded use of the
name is in Nurenburg on March 20, 1401 when Rupert III, Count of the
Palatinate and Holy Roman Empire conferred half a fief upon Fritz
Kettenring of the town of Lauf. Michael arrived in Philadelphia with his
two cousins Johann Jacob and Christopher on the ship "Chance" which sailed
from Rotterdam and was on the sea for 2 months. They went to Lancaster
about 65 miles west where they joined up with Johann Adam Kettenring ( born
1698 in Lamberg GE died 1775, Londonderry Township, Lebanon PA.) a
blacksmith who had crossed on the "Samuel" on 12/3/1740. The Kettenrings
were Lutherans. Within a year, Michael married Mary Marguard who was also
on the "Chance." Michael Jacob and Christopher all decided to leave
Lancaster for Southwest Virginia. Jacob and Christopher went first in
1769. Michael and Mary arrived in Wythe in 1772. In 1774, Virginia claimed
the western territory and called out the militia against the warring
Indians in a campaign called Lord Dinmores's War. On June 2, 1774, seven
Kettenring and Kettering men including four of Christopher's older
sons(Francis, Peter, Jacob and Phillip) were enrolled as Catron in Robert
Doak's company. The campaign ended at Point Pleasant (WVa) on October 10,
1774, when 3,000 soldiers defeated 1,000 Shawnee led by Chief Cornstalk.
After that, most of the Shawnee went west and Indian attacks decreased .

Montgomery County Tax List B. 1787 Michael had 1 male over 16, 5
horeses/mules, and 12 cattle.
Montgomery County Tax List 1789/90 Michael had 2 males 16 to 21 and 7
horses. He was on Reed Creek/Cedar Run. In 1800 Michael had 1 male over 16
and 1 horse. Henry had 1 male over 16 and 2 horses.

From "Virginia's Colonial Soldiers" by Lloyd DeWitt 1988 Michael was in
Robert Doak's company 2 June 1744.

against Peter Kinder, Henry Willis, Peter Katherine(Kettering), Andrew

They were all bound to their good behavior. (They were accused of being

allegiance to the "Commonwealth of Virginia as a free and indipendent
State", promising to refuse all allegiance to George the Third, King of
Great Britain. The oaths were administered in March, April, and May 1779
by Andrew Boyd, Jas. Newell and William Davis. The names inclued John
Harris, Martin Nowland, William Baxter, Michael Kettenring, Henry Wyrick,
Jacob Hauser, Jas. Husk, Wm Rutherford Jr. George Vaut, Jenkin William s,
John Vaut, Fredk Slamp, Moses Wells, Zacha. Blankspider, Henry Vice and
