Her approximate birth year is established by her age set forth in the Yorkshire Burial record in the North Yorkshire County Record Office ref # N-PR-WH1-9 page 28. Whitby Parish records list two Elizabeth Ventris born about that time. However the one born to Nicholas Ventris in 1711 died in 1719. This means the correct one is the one born to John Ventris in 1720.

The Family Search Center lists two dates for her christening: 10/12/1764 and 12/25/1764. Since they both list the father as John Smith, both entries may refer to the same Hannah Smith. If not, one of them is certain to be the Hannah Smith who married Francis Lee in Whitby in 1789.

The 1861 census shows John and Mary living in Hull and identifies him as a former mariner, now "almsman". They were living in the Victoria Alms House, which adjoined Trinity House, the offices of the Guild for commercial ship's captains and Humber River pilots. The Victoria Alms House provided homes for pensioners of the Guild. Since Mary's entry matches her entry in the 1851 census, in which Job is listed in the household, and Job's birth certificate confirms that his father's name was John and that he was a mariner, we can say with assurance that the couple listed in the 1861 census is the same one. The 1861 census confirms a year and place of birth, i.e. 1795 in Whitby , Yorkshire, for John. The Family Search Center has the records from the Whitby Parish Church. From these, John's parents can be readily identified.

The first name in the baptismal record is hard to read and has not been transcribed by Find My Past. I make it out as Francis daughter of John Lee. Francis can be either a man or woman's name. Evidently the minister did not check to see which this was. The Family Search Center, also, read it that way, except mistranscribed the year as 1656. As births and deaths were so consistently reported for this family in the parish register, I have no reason to doubt that this is the same Francis who married Patience Hope. Although he would have been 45 at the time of the marriage, I note that Patience is described in the marriage record as a widow. I have not been able to determine whether Hope was her maiden or married name. Francis is described in the parish records as a carpenter.
