General Notes: Husband - James Trail

The name Trail is Scottish and originally had a second "l" at the end ; i.e. Traill. James was born in Virginia about 1790. His ancestors were, presumably, part of the emigration of Scots, in the early 18th century to Pennsylvania and Maryland and then from there in the mid 18th century to free and low cost lands in Virginia and North Carolina. Civil War records reflect that Confederate Soldiers named Peter and James Trail were killed during the Civil War and a confederate soldier named Thomas Trail was wounded and furloughed for 60 days, with no further record (i.e. he may have died too - or possibly not as there was a Thomas Trail in Glade Springs, age 45, in the 1880 census). There is some evidence that this was James's sons (discussed under their listings). It would, certainly, explain why only his youngest son, John W., who was too young to fight, shows up in the 1870 census. According to Kenneth L. Sturgil's book, "Smyth County and the Civil War", practically every family in Smyth County was involved in the war. It, obviously, had a terrible impact on the Trail and many other families in the County.

General Notes: Child - Thomas Trail

There was a Thomas Trail who enlisted in Company A of the 63rd Virginia Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army on March 31, 1862. He was hospitalized on June 1, 1864 (this Company fought a battle at New Hope Church, Ga. on May 27, 1864) and he was given a 60 day fourlough on July 28, 1864. I did not find a record of his returning to duty. I could not find Thomas Trail in the 1870 census for Smyth Co. but the 1880 census has a Thomas Trail, age 45, who was working as a laborer for James K. Smith in Glade Spring, Washington Co., VA. According to Kenneth L. Sturgill's book, "Smyth County and the Civil War", the Confederat Army began conscripting 18 to 36 year olds in January and February 1862. Company F of the 63rd Va. Infantry Regiment was formed in Marion from these draftees. According to “The Virginia Home Guards” by Jeffrey C. Weaver, H. E. Howard (1996), Company A was enlisted in Abbingdon on March 31 and April 1, 1862, mostly of residents of Washington Co. It is a reasonable surmise that the Thomas Trail mentioned for Company A is, in fact, the son of James, who was from the Seven Mile Ford area of Smyth Co. and that he traveled down to Abbingdon to enlist, rather than wait to be drafted.

General Notes: Child - James A. Trail

There is a James Trail who enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 27 , 1861 and served in Company E of the 50th Virginia Infantry Regiment . He died on active duty on September 16, 1861. Company E fought in Charleston WV. on September 13, 1861. According to Kenneth L. Sturgill' s book, "Smyth County and the Civil War" the second Company formed in the County, after war was declared, was Company F of the 50th Virginia Infantry, which was formed in the Rich Valley area in May 1861 and was known as "Smyth Greys". Company E was apparently formed at the same time in other parts of the County, according to “The Virginia Home Guards” by Jeffrey C. Weaver, H. E. Howard (1996). Since Company E was, in fact, formed in Smyth Co., it seems apparent that the James Trail listed for Company E was, indeed, the son of James Trail of the Seven Mile Ford area of Smyth County.

General Notes: Child - Peter L. Trail

A Peter Trail enlisted in Company E of the 23rd Virginia Battn Infantry Regiment on May 1, 1862. He became a prisoner of war and had his arm amputated on May 31 1864 at Cold Harbor, Va. He was a prisoner at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington DC on June 1, 1864. On October 24, 1864 he was a POW in Elmira, NY. He died of disease, while still a POW on December 8, 1864. Kenneth L. Sturgill, in his book, "Smyth Count y and the Civil War" discusses three Companies of the 23rd Virginia Battn, which were made up at the same time in July 1861 in Smyth County . Although he does not mention Company E, he does mention that a Company of replacement troops of the 23rd Virginia Battn was made up in 1864 from the area. Company E was apparently also formed in the County to provide replacement troops.  “The Virginia Home Guards” by Jeffrey C. Weaver, H. E. Howard (1996) confirms that Company E was formed in Smyth County. This fact supports the Peter Trail listed for Company E being the son of James Trail from the Seven Mile Ford region of Smyth County.

General Notes: Child - Nancy J. Trail

1900 census gives her middle initial as J., which is the tip off to her identity. Her birth date is confusing because she lists her age as 60 (birth month September) in the 1900 census and 31 in the 1880 census . The truth is in between. She was born Nancy J. Trail in about June 1844, based upon her listing in the Smyth Co. census as age 6 on July 19, 1850 and age 15 on June 3, 1860. In 1870 she was living as a house servant in Rich Valley (Southside P.O.) and gave her age as 20. She grew up in the Seven Mile Ford area. Her daughter, Mollie, also, followed Nancy's practice of giving her children her surname. In 1900 her sons John Henry and Rush and all of Mollie's children were living with her in Maiden Springs.

General Notes: Child - Elizabeth Trail

According to the 1870 census, Elizabeth Trail, age 22, was living alone in the Broad Ford area of Rich Valley, Smyth Co., VA.

General Notes: Child - John W. Trail

John Trail was a farm laborer in the Broad Ford area of Rich Valley, Smyth Co. at the time of the 1870 census.

General Notes: Husband - William Vaughan

He was a Knighted in 1542 and was from Talgarth.

VAUGHAN family, of Porthaml, parish of Talgarth, Brecknock.
This branch of the Vaughan family was founded by ROGER VAUGHAN, second son of Sir Roger Vaughan of Tretower. He was possibly the Roger Vaughan of Tyle-glas who was pardoned on 9 July 1491, and figures again in Henry VIII's pardon roll (1509) as Roger ap Roger of Tyle-glas, or Roger Vaughan of Talgarth. He was granted the offices of steward and receiver of the lordship of Dinas, 17 January 1509, and was dead before 25 September 1514, when those offices were granted to Sir Griffith ap Rice. His wife was Joan, daughter of Robert Whitney by Constance, daughter of James, lord Audley. The Vaughans of Tregunter descended from his second son, Thomas Vaughan. The heir, WATKIN VAUGHAN, married Joan, daughter of Ieuan Gwilym Vaughan of White Peyton.

The family became prominent with his heir, WILLIAM VAUGHAN, who obtained a lease of the demesne lands of Dinas, 14 February 1529. He was the squire of Porthaml when Leland visited the place, and in 1536 he welcomed bishop Rowland Lee so royally that the latter commended him in his correspondence with his master, Thomas Cromwell. Vaughan, said the bishop in 1538, was a man to be cherished. On 17 December of that year he was appointed chancellor and receiver of the lordships and manors of Brecon, Hay, Cantrecelly, Penkelli, and Alexanderston, offices which he held till 7 July 1546, when he vacated them in favour of his son Roger. He was sheriff of Brecknock in 1540-1 and was knighted in 1542. In October 1546 he was given the wardship of Joan and Elizabeth, sisters and co-heirs of Henry Myle of Newcourt. (Joan married his second son, Walter Vaughan of Moccas, and Elizabeth, his grandson, Rowland Vaughan.) He died before 1553, for his wife, Catherine, daughter of Jenkin Havard, was living in widowhood at White Peyton when she received a pardon on 6 May of that year for being accessory to a murder.

The heir was ROGER VAUGHAN, who was knighted in 1549. He was sheriff of Brecknockshire in 1551-2, and was on commissions to survey church plate in Brecknockshire and Herefordshire in 1553. He figures in queen Mary's pardon roll, 1 December 1553, and received the stewardship of the castles and lordships of Huntingdon and Kington, 6 May 1554. On queen Elizabeth's pardon roll, 1559, he is coupled with Porthaml and Newcourt. He was one of the commissioners who examined on behalf of the privy council the tree which displayed the sign of the cross at S. Donats, 5 June 1561. He was Member of Parliament for Brecknockshire, 1553-62, when he was succeeded by his son Rowland Vaughan, and again in 1571. In the meantime he had represented the borough of Brecon, 1562-7. He died before 31 March 1585 when administration of his estate was granted.

He left several children by his wife, Catherine, daughter of Sir George Herbert of Swansea. The eldest, Watkin, died without issue and the estate passed to Catherine, daughter of the second son, ROWLAND VAUGHAN (Member of Parliament for Brecon, 1559-62, and for Brecknockshire, 1562-7; it seems that he died before the next parliamentary election). Catherine married Sir Robert Knollys (Member of Parliament for Brecknockshire, 1588-1603). Their heiress married the head of the Vaughan family, Sir CHARLES VAUGHAN of Dunraven \emdash see Vaughan family of Bredwardine. ROGER VAUGHAN, of Talgarth, was the third son of Sir Roger Vaughan. He married Frances, base daughter of Thomas Somerset, who married, secondly, William Vaughan of Tretower.

Roger Vaughan's son and heir, also ROGER VAUGHAN, married, in 1608, Ann, daughter of Paul Delahaie of Alltyrynys.

Biography

The Vaughans of Porthaml were a junior branch of the Vaughans of Tretower, Breconshire; both, with many other branches, were descended from Roger Vaughan of Bredwardine, Herefordshire, who fell at Agincourt. His son Sir Roger, founder of the Tretower Vaughans, owed his pre-eminence in Breconshire to the favour of William Herbert†, 1st Earl of Pembroke. Sir Roger's younger son settled at Porthaml and acquired the stewardship of the lordship of Dinas, and his grandson Sir William (the MP's father) further advanced the family fortune and prestige by securing the wardship of the coheiresses of New Court, Herefordshire, and the office of chancellor and receiver of the lordship of Brecknock. He was the first sheriff of the newly formed shire.3

In 1546 Sir William handed over his offices in the lordship of Brecon to his son Roger, and probably died soon afterwards. Roger took up his father's leases of crown land in Breconshire, and as justice of the peace in the 1560s he was involved in the investigation of the 'miraculous apparition' in the grounds of St. Donats, Glamorganshire, and its supposed exploitation in Catholic interests by the owner, Sir Thomas Stradling†. Ten years after that he was accused in Star Chamber of 'maintaining' a Herefordshire murderer, and that in association with a priest suspected of popish practices.4

He died on 16 June 1571; complications over the inheritance postponed administration of the estate until 31 Mar. 1585. His widow married Sir Henry Jones.5
