Cowper claimed descent, through his mother, to John Donne, the poet (1 572-1631). However, at least one expert on Donne claims that there were not any descendants of Donne with that surname in the 18th century.

However, Cowper and Donne may have had some common ancestry, as, according to one internet source, they both used the same coat of arms.

General Notes: Husband - David Charles Eller

David Eller, son of John Eller and Catherine Eldreth, was born in December 1842 according to the 1900 census, in Ashe Co. North Carolina. He is shown with his parents in the 1850 Ashe Co. census as age 5, and the 1860 Ashe Co. census as age 15. He was not found in the 1870 census. Apparently, he left home, and married Marildia by 1867. They were living in Tennessee by 1867-1868, as there is a son John Eller, age 12, born in Tennessee. David and Marilda moved back to North Carolina by 1872-1873, as their son William, age 7, was born in North Carolina. The 1880 US Census of Staggs Creek, Ashe Co. North Carolina is shown below.

Census Place: Staggs Creek, Ashe, North Carolina

William ELLER Son M S W 7 NC Occ: At Home Fa: N C Mo: IN

Although he is listed as David Eller Jr. in the 1880 census and there is a David Eller Senior also listed in Staggs Creek in that census, he is not David Jr.'s father, based upon the listings for senior in the earlier censuses (i.e. David never lived with him and David senior' s first child is 16 years younger than David Jr.). Although the ages for David in the 1850 and 1860 census do not match exactly with those in later censuses, the David Jr. who married Marilda is likely the David who was living as the son of John in earlier censuses, based upon the available Ellers in Staggs Creek. The designations of senior and junior were probably just to distinguish them in this small community.

General Notes: Child - William M. Eller

I am advised that Staggs Creek, NC is now named Clinton.

of Glyntawe and Peyton in Breconshire. According to the Visitation of Wilts of 1565, Owen Gethin (aka Owen Gethyn) was entitled to a coat of arms "Azure, a Stag trippant argent, between his tynes a crown". This coat of arms was supposedly granted to his grandfather, Cradoc ap Gwillim, by King John.
