   Christened:

       Spouse: Edward Smith (1872-      )

General Notes: Husband - William Thomas Rea

Baptized December 25, 1856. He attended Trinity House School and obtained his Master Mariner Certificate on October 15, 1880. He married in 1879 Annie Elizabeth Morrell b.1854 (daughter of a Hull builder, Joseph Morrell); their daughter was Annie Elizabeth Rea b.1880 Hull. It has been suggested that William was an absentee father - certainly in 1881 and 1891 Annie Rea and her daughter were living with Annie's parents at 45 Lansdowne St Hull and Annie was working as a dressmaker. He was employed for at least ten years by the Wilson Shipping Line, by 1900 the largest private ship owning company in the world. He sailed on long voyages spending up to a year at a time at sea. In 1882 he crewed on the SS Anerley from London to Sydney. Other ships on which he worked were SS Salmo, SS Leo, SS Nero, SS Humber and SS Sapho. On February 23, 1885 he sailed from Hull on the SS CAiro. At the beginning of October the ship docked at Cronstadt (St. Petersburg's main port). On October 4 he went in a small boat to visit a friend of his father on another ship. On the way back he attempted to spring onto a companion ladder on his ship from the small boart and fell into the water hitting his head during the fall. He was drowned. By 1901 Annie Rea (junior) had married Edward Smith b.1872 - a leather merchant's assistant - and had a daughter Doris Smith b.1898. Annie Rea (senior) was living with them at 1 The Avenues Linneaus St Hull (next door to her mother-in-law, see above) and is listed in the census as being a widow. Annie Rea (senior) died in the autumn of 1906.
