General Notes: Husband - George Kemble

George purchased Pembridge Castle in Welsh Newton and made it habitable in 1675. It had been a Royalist garrison and had suffered severely during a siege and surrender in 1644. Pembridge had a chapel where St. John Kemble would say mass, although Roman Catholic masses had been outlawed by Statute 27 issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. It is said that the Catholic Earls/Marquesses of Worcester were allowing the law to be openly flouted.

George is said to have been granted the Kemble 3 leopard coat of arms by William Camden, King-at-arms in the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

General Notes: Child - Richard Kemble

Saved King Charles II at the battle of Worcester in 1651 by giving him a horse. He was a Captain. It was he who obtained the headless body of St. John Kemble and buried it in Welsh Newton. He was a resident of Pembridge Castle in Welsh Newton.

General Notes: Husband - John Mitchell Kemble

Attended Cambridge and became an Apostle, a small group of free thinkers at Cambridge. Another one of the Apostles at the time was Alfred Tennyson, the poet. They both went to Spain in 1830 to run guns for General Torrijos, who was trying to overthrow King Ferdinand VII of Spain . The plot was a failure and one of his British friends was executed . He returned to England in 1831. In 1833 he published the first translation into modern English of the old Anglo Saxon saga, Beowulf, "Poems of Beowulf" . Thereafter he went to Gottingen University to study philology, and, having achieved a modest success as a scholar and archaeologist, settled for a time in Germany with his wife, the daughter of one of his professors. In 1840 he obtained the British government position, Examiner of Plays (which was the official censor), upon his father's retirement from that post. (Very few plays were rejected during their time on the job).He held this post until 1857. He was followed in this position by his good friend William Bodham Donne (another former Apostle at Cambridge). His best known book, "History of the Saxons in England" was written in 1848. You can read volume 1 of that book here and volume 2 here .

I have attached excerpts from his diary, held in the Morgan Library in NYC to illustrate his poetry and adventures in Spain. I have also included his drawing of the family coat of arms from that diary.

He died and was buried in Ireland. I am attaching a photo of the monument erected in his honor at his gravesite in Dublin. death bed photo
