General Notes: Husband - William Harrison

William is believed to be the same person who married Sarah Bennet and was listed in the marriage license as a waggoner to His Majesty's Royal Artillery. (see the evidence in the listings for Abigail Sutton and  William H Harrison). There is some evidence in the records of the Callender familly (their daughter, Sarah having married a Callender) that William and Sarah, fled to Nova Scotia, as many loyalists did. There was a William Harrison, a Baptist, probably from New Jersey, who arrived with other loyalists in Beaver Harbour Nova Scotia on the Camel in September 1783. If this is the same man, then his daughter Sarah was, in fact born in New York and not in Nova Scotia (see conflicting records in listing for Sarah (Harrison Callender). In partnership with Caleb Paul, William Harrison erected a sawmill on a stream called Waswaswiniwick at the head of Beaver Harbour in the Parish of Pennfield in 1785. In 1786 Harrison sold his share in the sawmill to his partner and, apparently left the area. Like many loyalists, he may have returned to New York. This would be consistent with Sarah being in NY at the time of her marriage to William Callender (some time before Maria Callender was born in 1799).

General Notes: Wife - Abigail Sutton

Her marriage Bond states that she is from NY City. Internet sources have identified her parents as Benjamin and Elena Sutton of North Castle, Westchester Cty. This would mean that Abigail's sister, Mary, was married (in 1857) to William Underhill, who was to become a prominent loyalist. William Underhill and his wife left for New Brunswick after the Revolutionary War. In light of the fact that I have found no hard record identifying William as the father of William H., this loyalist connection is an important reason for assigning William as the father. There is some evidence to suggest that William H's father was a loyalist (see his entry). Another reason to attach William as the father of William H. is that William H. was a life long member of the Brick Church, where William married Abigail. The addition of the middle name could have served to distinguish William H. from his father. The fact that the William Harrison, "wagoner to his Majesty's Royal Artillery" ( according to the marriage license) who married Sarah Bennet, did so at Trinity Church, rather than the Brick Church, would seem to distinguish these two Williams. However, according to "A History of th e Brick Presbyterian Church in the City of New York" by Shephard Knapp (1909), at the time of William's marriage to Sarah in 1780, the Brick Church had been seized by the British, who were using it as a hospital. The Trinity Church was only a few blocks away. It is well documented that Sarah Harrison, who married William Callender, is the sister of William H. Harrison. William H. Harrison mentioned his sister Mary Goldsborough in his will. Mary's daughter Margaret mentions her aunt Sarah Callender in her will. There is a big gap, then, in age between William and Mary (born 1764) and their sister Sarah (born 1780). Taking these facts together, the close association of birth dates with marriages and the name Sarah for both mother and daughter argue strongly for Sarah being the product of William's second marriage. The dates of the marriage and William H.'s birth suggest that Abigail and William married because of a pregnancy. This appears to have been a pattern followed by William with his second marriage and by his son William H. with his marriage (see the entry for his wife Catherine Van Alstyne). Such situations were more common at that time and not as scandalous as in later eras. Another reason to connect William as William H 's father is that William H's daughter Catherine married Hart Sands, whose grandmother, Mary Sands, married a Sutton from Mamaroneck (a family connected to the Suttons of North Castle). This means that Hart may have met Catherine Harrison , whose grandmother was a Sutton, via his connection to the Sutton family (his step grandfather having, also, been a Sutton).

Her father Benjamin Sutton refers to her in his will in 1759 as being not yet 13. I am assuming she died before 1780 because William married Sarah Bennet in 1780.

General Notes: Child - William H. Harrison

According to his obituary in the NY Evening Post, his residence at time of death was 145 Center St. in Manhattan. His grave, along with the others from Brick Presbyterian Church, was moved to Church Hill, the Evergreens Cemetary, 1629 Bushwick Ave., Brooklyn, NY, near the Queens border.

When William H. Harrison died, his obituary in the NY Evening Post mentions nothing of his family background and emphasizes that he was a veteran of the War of 1812, where he served in the artillery. Indeed, it is striking that William H. volunteered for service in the War of 1812, as he already was married with 2 children to support at that time . I suspect that he was trying to disassociate himself from his father , who was a loyalist. The strongest evidence for William H's father having been a loyalist is contained in the death certificate of his sister, Sarah's child,
William Callender Jr. (Manhattan Cert. # 11577 fo r 1842), which states that his mother, Sarah, was born in Nova Scotia . After the Revolutionary War, many Loyalists left the US for this part of Canada. The timing of Sarah's birth is close enough to when Loyalists began to leave to make such an association of facts but Sarah's own death ledger entry in NYC states that she was born in NY. If I am right, the entry closer in time to the event is probably correct. Since William Harrison and Sarah Bennet married on April 11, 1780 and Sarah was born on Septermber 15, 1780, it is likely that she was born in NY but the family had to leave thereafter for Canada. As Sarah may have related stories to her son about being in Nova Scotia as a young child, this may have created the confusion in his mind as to where his mother was born.

General Notes: Wife - Catherine Van Alstyne

According to the 1800 Census for the 6th Ward of Manhattan, Catharine and her new husband, William, were living with her mother and a child , under age 10. The date of the census was August 4. Since her mother was over 45 and a widow, this suggests that Catharine and William, who married in January, 1800, married because she was already pregnant . After her husband's death she moved to Herkimer Co. NY to live near her daughter Harriet. From the 1840 census information about her household in German Flatts, it appears likely that her grandchildren, Hart's children, were living with her.

A relative has provided a receipt from 1864 for grave number 109 in Lot 8999 in Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn. George Underhill Sands purchased the plot for $20 for Catharine Sherwood. Papers provided with the receipt indicate Ms. Sherwood was a widow born in 1783 who died at 161 so. 8th st. in Brooklyn. The gravesite, which is off Meadow Ave. in Section 114, does not contain a readable grave marker. I found a Brooklyn death certificate (#4482) indicating she died July 7, 1864 at age 81. An obituary in the NY Evening Post on July 8, 1864 indicates she was the widow of Seth Sherwood. I have evidence that Catharine Sherwood is, in fact Catharine (Harrison) Van Alstyne. George U. Sands was her grandson and she raised him as a child when his mother died. He would have been the only one of her family with enough money to purchase such a luxury cemetery plot. According to the records of the First and Second Presbyterian Church in lower Manhattan, the church in which Catharine Van Alstyne married William Harrison, a Catharine Van Alstyne was born to Abraham Van Alstyne and Catharine, his wife on May 29, 1784. Considering women of this period rarely knew their precise age and birth date, this is close enough a match to Catharine Sherwood to convince me that the two are one and the same. In addition, in the 1850 census for the 4th ward of Manhattan, her grandson, Charles Sands, was living with a Catharine Sherman, age 62. While the name and age are off somewhat, I believe Charles was living with his grandmother, who raised him. He was 15.

In February 1841 a new Baptist Church was founded in neighboring Mohawk called the First Baptist Society of Mohawk. According to "History of Herkimer County" (1879) by George A. Hardin, founding members were Uri C. Watson and his wife Harriet and Seth B. Sherwood. The church closed in 1873 and I have not been able to find its records but it appears that Seth B. Sherwood, who was living as a widower in German Flatts at the time of the 1840 census, acquired a wife named Catharine some time between 1840 and 1843 because the Mohawk Courier printed a notice dated September 30, 1843 from Seth B. Sherwood "Whereas, my wife Catharine has left my bed and board without any just cause or provocation; all persons are hereby notified not to harbor or trust her on my account, as I shall pay no debts of her contracting." This is undboubtedly the Seth Sherwood referred to in the 1864 obituary of Catherine Sherwood and Catharine is undoubtedly Catharine (Van Alstyne) Harrison.

General Notes: Child - Harriet Harrison

She continued to live in German Flats, Herkimer Co., NY after her husband's death, at least through 1860 and did not remarry. A woman of the right name and age is listed in Oswego, NY in the 1870 census.

Bernice Alverda Hart was born 20 Sept 1903. She married John Major Laird (Sr) 17 Jun 1932. Patricia BreseeGilbert remembers Aunt Bernice had red hair (auburn or red hair must have run in the family). Uncle John owned the Warsaw Barber Shop. They loved to garden and their backyard was a floral masterpiece. I understand Bernice used to sell tomatoes off her back porch for 10 cents a pound. Cousin David Laird (their grandson) said her sales were especially good on Sundays after the services let out from the Catholic Church across from their house.
