From The McKinney Examiner Feb. 24, 1921Thomas Reed Murray was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina on what is now known as the Vanderbilt estate on the French Broad River. He was the fifteenth child of a family of sixteen children, fifteen of whom lived to be grown. His mother was Mary Hawkins. Grandfather and grandmother Hawkins are included in the old homestead that had been in the family for 200 years. The estate is three miles from Ashville. The present owner takes care of the Hawkin's graves on his domain.Thomas R. Murray was married in Ruth erford, N. C. in 1849 to Miss Dilean Ann Wood, a near kinswoman, to Abraham Lincoln and whose ancestry included the illustrious name of Wade Hamilton.He left North Carolina and settled near Batesville, Ak. He enlisted in the Confederate Army at Antioch Church in Izard County , Ark., and served four years under Col. McCarver, a Methodist preacher, Col. Cravens, and Lt . Col. Mathena.Leaving Arkansas for Texas in 1867, he settled in Collin County, on a farm six miles west of McKinney in the Foote Community.

William alledgedly born Ulster Plantations in North Ireland, many Ulster "scotts" migrated to colonies 1721 to Pa, Del and Md.

Moved from Md 1740 to Lancaster CO., Pa but Land was scarce (all settled out).
The Irish migrated 1746 to Orange Co NC where cheap or free land was available, - this was later Alamance Co - but at that time it was on the extreme frontier, no roads, Indian trails, and Hillsboro NC became a major town in 1765 and by 1775 Orange the most populous county in NC , was split, several times.
In 1790 William owned 700 acres of land (more or less one section).

William was born on the Ulster Plantations in Ireland.
By 1746, no more land was available in Pennsylvania, so the Scots moved
to the "back county" of North Carolina where land was cheap or even free.
The original settlers of the Cross Roads region arrived in about 1740
and had the surnames Murray, Tate, Anderson, White, Mebane, etc. There
were no roads. Everything had to be brought by horses or horse drawn
sleds on old Indian and trader trails. The trails were slowly enlarged
and by 1765 there were a few wagon trails. Hillsboro became a town in
1765 and by 1775 Orange County became the most populous county in
North Carolina. Orange County was reduced in size several times including
the formation of Alamance County from Orange County territory in 1848.
William came to America from the Ulster Plantations in Ireland about 1721
as a child with his family. They settled near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania ,
with numerous other Scotch-Irish.
William married in Pennsylvania and his first five children were born there.
It is believed that William, his wife, and first five children moved to
North Carolina in the late 1740's and that his last two children were
born in North Carolina.
William and his family settled near the Cross Roads Church in Orange County
in the part that is now Alamance County.
In 1790, William owned 700 acres of land and one slave.

General Notes: Child - James Murray

The 1790 census for Orange County lists only three James Murray heads of household. The other two would be James' sister Elizabeth's husband, James Murray (1725-1810) and his son by a prior marriage, James Murray (1752-1821). One of these three is, presumably, the James Murray who is listed as a Regulator or Regulator sympathizer.

The Regulators were active in the late 1760's protesting British taxes , fees, etc., through force of arms if necessary. They met the British in the Battle of Alamance on May 16, 1771 and were crushed. North Carolinians argue that this, and not the Battle of Lexington and Concord, several years later (April 19, 1775), was the first battle of the Revolutionary War.

Notes for WILLIAM LAWRENCE MURRAY:
William Lawrence settled on the east side of Stagg Creek, a short distance above where it flows into Quaker Creek. He acquired more land, and built the ancestral home of the Cross Roads Murrays.
His will, made January 2, 1805, and probated on February 7, 1805, mentions his grist mill , saw mill, "my land claims and rights in Cumberland," and other large tracts of land. He mentions his Negro slaves but does not indicate how many he owned, all of which indicates that he had become quite a man of property.
